20 Mental Health Signs and Symptoms Which People Tend to Ignore

The problems with mental health increasingly hit the headlines. There are a lot of articles about famous people committing suicide, or about mass shootings, or even about the rising rate of committed suicides. The number of children diagnosed with depression, ADHD, pediatric bipolar disorder and anxiety also increases.

Awareness about these problems has to be higher than before. Why society turns a blind eye to the mental health of people? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about one in five adults suffer from mental illness.

A brief history of mental health problems.

Mental illnesses aren’t new to the human population and society. It just had different names over the past centuries. During past times, a lot of cultures in the world viewed this problem with a superstitious or religious matter. Moreover, a lot of people believed that those people that were lower-functioning were possessed by some evil spirits, or practiced witchcraft, and a lot more. The treatments that such people received were torturous.

They believed that they have to stop the evil so that they usually isolated the person, abused him or her physically, and a lot more. There were times that some cultures even practiced making a hole in the head of the sufferer, as they believed that it is going to release every “bad element” from inside.

Although during 500 BC Hippocrates treated mentally ill people with medications and removed them from living situations and jobs, medical information’s amount was obviously inadequate. Most of his medications were made of opiates, in order to keep the patient calm.

From the entire population in the world, women were the most affected by mental illnesses. In the past, what was labeled as a mental disorder was usually hormonal imbalances that caused them to be too emotional, anxious, reactive, and depressed.

For years, or even centuries, there was the idea about highly depressed, schizophrenic, anxious, or bipolar people and how they look like. Usually, there is the image of odd statements, strange ramblings, disheveled appearances, and poor grooming.

A lot of people believe that those that suffer from mental illnesses loudly display emotions, etc. The truth is that many individuals have functioning mental illnesses. They can take or cannot take medication; meeting them briefly or observing them from a distance, they will look just fine. In fact, they are well-spoken, intelligent, groomed and dressed appropriately, employed and financially secure. From this, we can say that they possess the expected social behavior of well-adjusted individuals.

They adjusted well in order to cope with the symptoms of anxiety, depression, compulsions, phobias, moods wings, or everything their mental disorder takes. Humans are fantastically adaptive creatures, so, mental illnesses cannot change this fact. A lot of people who suffer from mental illnesses turn to meditation, religion, exercise, visualization, schedules adjusting, or accepting jobs which will accommodate as the symptoms.

They will even take some proactive measures, such as reading articles which address the symptoms and alternative behaviors of the illness. Still, although they will learn to function, there will still be some hidden symptoms they will hide. Also, they will find the symptoms hard to discuss and find some alternatives for.

These are the twenty signs of poor mental health which a lot of people tend to ignore:

  1. Social isolation or anxiety;
  2. Constant mood swings;
  3. Sweating more than normal or feeling quite cold;
  4. Low tolerance or frustration levels which lead to angry outbreaks;
  5. Sensitivity to crowds, noise, or too much stimulus;
  6. Scars from harming themselves;
  7. Fluctuating sex drive from high to low;
  8. Difficulties in sleep – feeling extremely tired even they took a good sleep or not being able to sleep;

  20. Constant feeling of inadequacy.

There are people who battle these demons with humor, as they realize that it helps them overcome such situations. Comics or memes are an excellent way to look on mental illnesses differently and educate other people about every symptom they deal with every day.

It is also essential to know that if someone looks “well-adjusted,” it does not mean that he or she suffers from a mental health problem. It simply means that he or she created the system for limiting the impact it usually has on life. This is the same for every survivor.

The mental health subject is diverse, which means that it may be subtle or pervasive in the symptoms it displays. In most of the cases, it is brain dysfunction, but it can be an actual disease in other cases. Every person that suffers from poor mental health should seek personal help.
