There are five celestial animals in the ancient practice of Feng Shui. They are the: Dragon, Snake, Turtle, Tiger and Phoenix.
Historically, the most powerful of these are the Dragon and Phoenix.
As we know, Feng Shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). The Feng Shui practice discusses architecture in metaphorical terms of "invisible forces" that bind the universe, earth, and humanity together, known as qi. The Dragon and Phoenix have their own energies or forces that when bound together, are believed to be the perfect couple.
Story of the Phoenix and Dragon
The Dragon is maybe one of the most representative symbols of the Chinese art, as it is rare to see any celebration without its presence. The term a part from being part of the 5 celestial animals is also used to describe the energetic currents, we speak of water dragons to describe courses of this element, or of mountain dragons to symbolize the channels where the energy flows in the mountains.
The Phoenix mythological bird corresponds to the inverse side of the turtle, in other words the facing, the facade, the views that most buildings own. The phoenix needs a certain space, an open area to receive energy.
The Dragon is seen as “yang” while Phoenix is seen as “yin”, and therefore they complement each other as a beautiful balance. The yin and yang balance is said to enhance matrimonial bliss.
The Dragon symbolizes creativity and ambition and the Phoenix symbolizes warmth and wisdom. What a harmonious blend when placed together!
The author Dan Brown once wrote, “The ancients envisioned their world in two halves - masculine and feminine. Their gods and goddesses worked to keep a balance of power. Yin and Yang. When male and female were balanced, there was harmony in the world. When they were unbalanced there was chaos.”
