Did you know that what you eat can truly enhance your sex life? Through practice and experience, we’ve learned that nutrition becomes much more fun when we approach it in a playful way — and sometimes even in a way that will make you feel sexier, not just healthier.
Here are six foods that are not only easy to incorporate into your diet, but will also give your libido (and hopefully your love life) a boost, while promoting your overall heath in the process.
1. Acai Berries
Eat acai berries to rev things up in the bedroom. There, I said it. We all thought the acai was a berry. That’s what it’s called, right? However, the superfood fruit with a multitude of health benefits is actually a palm fruit with a single seed which grows in the flood plain areas of the Amazon river.
The acai berry increases blood circulation in the body, which contributes to a boost in sex drive, especially among men. Add acai to juices, smoothies, nut milks, salads, yogurt, raw desserts — the possibilities are endless! When shopping for acai, look for an organic, freeze-dried, non-GMO product. There are many sources of acai out there, so as always, do your research.
2. Almonds
Almonds are more potent than you think. In The Testosterone Factor: A Practical Guide to Improving Vitality and Virility, Naturally, author Shafiq Qaadri cites research showing that men who ate diets rich in monounsaturated fat (found in almonds) had the highest testosterone levels. They also contain the amino acid L-arginine, which has been said to enhance erections. They are an ancient aphrodisiac, depicted in artwork as far back as 3,000 B.C.
Almonds are also an excellent source of vitamin E, a super sexy nutrient, as well as B vitamins and high-quality protein. Almonds also provide our bodies with the trace minerals selenium and zinc, essential for sexual and reproductive health. Their seductive properties lie in the olfactory realm: who doesn’t love the sweet smell of almonds?
3. Greens, greens, greens
Eat your greens, and improve your libido function (and get a ton of other health benefits in the process!). Green tea, leafy greens, avocados, celery and pretty much any green fruit or vegetable you can think of are all essential foods to eat on a daily basis to ensure that your energy levels are optimal, with all the vitamins and minerals you need. Really, you can never eat enough greens — for your sexual organs, and for everything else in your body. Try this green smoothie for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
4. Maca
Maca is Mother Nature’s natural Viagra. Birthed in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes, maca is loaded with B vitamins, calcium and amino acids. It has the ability to increase stamina, reduce fatigue and enhance male and female libido. Additionally, maca is essential to keep on hand if you are a post-menopausal femme looking for a boost in the boudoir.
5. Sea Veggies
Sea vegetables, composed mainly of saltwater, purify the body just as they do to the sea. Because their chemical composition is so close to that of human plasma, they have the ability to balance the body at a cellular level. Sea veggies also help to transform toxic metals into salts for the body to eliminate. They are extremely rich in vitamins and minerals, complex carbohydrates — even proteins. What’s more, they’re so supportive for your sex organs. If you don’t already, you’ll want to incorporate seaweed, dulse, kelp, nori and wakame into your daily dietary regimen.
6. Strawberries
Strawberries are brimming with antioxidants which boost blood flow — to your sexual organs, among other places. They contain high levels of zinc, a superstar nutrient that is said to help women’s body prepare itself for sex.
